The Residency

Writers need to breathe, too.

retreat, v., to withdraw, retire, or draw back, especially for shelter or seclusion

In collaboration with From the Fishouse, the Hillholm Writing Residency supports emerging writers by providing nurturing time and space to dedicate to their craft.

For a two-week period at various points during the year, a cohort of writers enters retreat at Hillholm Estate to work intensively and connect with like-minded artists. Hillholm provides each cohort member with a private en-suite bedroom and workspace, all meals, and daily yoga classes and meditations. Other amenities include a cedar barrel sauna, jacuzzi, clay tennis court, craft cocktail bar, riverside expansive grounds, access to abundant hiking trails, a robust menu of Healing Arts services, and walking distance to downtown Kingfield. Hillholm’s public spaces are open and available to writers throughout the day. High speed wireless internet is available throughout the property. Laundry service is available.

About the Residency

Residency applications for the 2024 Cohort I (May 12-24, 2024) are due by March 15, 2024. Residents are selected on a rolling basis; all applicants selected as residents will be notified on or before March 22, 2024. Consistent with the enduring Fishouse philosophy to support emerging writers, Hillholm prioritizes awards to applicants with two or fewer significant publications of writing, at any stage in their careers. Unlike prior Fishouse offerings, Hillholm accepts writers of any written medium, not just poetry.

Applications should include:

1.     Up to five pages of writing samples

2.     A letter of intent for your time in residency

3.     Curriculum vitae

4.     Two written references

All expenses (full room and board) of Hillholm residents are supported by endowed scholarship. The residents’ only expenses include beverages purchased in the Lounge; Healing Arts services selected by each resident, if any; laundry services; and gratuities.
